FAQ
Q. What charge access control do I have?
The Charge Wise NEO Range offers two charging access modes. Plug and Charge, and Authorization. Plug and Charge is preset as the factory default, which means your wallbox offers free access to all EV drivers, so it is highly recommended to use in your private area.
Authorization means every charging session needs to be started by RFID tags or APP. The NEO range come with 2 x RFID tags as part of the package, more can be ordered from the accessories store.
Q. Can I use the EV Charger for charging all EV vehicles?
Yes.
NEO socket variants come with a Type 2 socket. If your EV comes with Type 1 or CCS1 inlet, we suggest you contact us and we can arrange a custom cable for your situation. 99% of all EV’s sold in Australia have a Type 2 connector by default.
Q. How do I decide between 7kW and 22kW charging power if I have three phase electricity supply?
The On Board Charger(OBC) of your EV vehicle determines the maximum AC charging rate, often measured in kW (kilowatts). Generally, 7kW wallbox is suitable for most mainstream electrical vehicles in the market. A 22kW EV wallbox considered as future-proof and getting more popular. If you purchase Charge Wise NEO 22KW charger, setting the charging current in the app, you can set the full range of the charging power from 1.4kW to 22kW.
Note: Please check your vehicle specs for the max charge rate, for example the Telsa Model 3 and Y have a maximum Charge speed of 11kW. This is not to say future models will not support 22kW.
Q. Can I charge EV and PHEV vehicles with the same charger?
Yes.
The Charge Wise Wallbox range is able to charge all models of electrical vehicles (EV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) of all automobile brands with the Type 2 connector.
Q. What is OCPP and how will this affect the charger?
All Charge Wise NEO chargers come equipped with OCPP 1.6 capability, allowing seamless integration with third-party cloud software.
This feature offers numerous benefits, from enabling businesses to manage multiple chargers via a CMS system for reporting and load balancing to integrating with home automation systems for optimized charging efficiency. Additionally, OCPP plays a crucial role in future-proofing national power grids by allowing electrical resellers to balance loads across home and public chargers, ensuring grid stability.
Since 2019, all new chargers in the UK must be OCPP-compatible, and it’s only a matter of time before similar regulations are adopted worldwide.
Q. Do I need to install and external RCD?
Yes.
You need to have an external RCD installed in the upstream. All Charge Wise chargers are compliant with IEC 62955:2018 with 6mA DC residual current protection integrated into the charger. However, an RCD/RCCB/RCBO, at least type A, characteristics C must be installed to provide the maximum protection of the electrical safety.
Q. What type of RCBO breakers should be picked for the installation of an EV Wallbox Charger?
Please refer to the table below for recommended RCBO breaker selection.
Input | Specification | Remark |
Single phase wallbox | 2P, 40A RCBO, at least Type A, Characteristic C | 50Amp is recommended if the ambient temperature is higher than 40°C |
Three phase wallbox | 4P, 40A RCBO, at least Type A, Characteristic C |
Q. What size electrical cable should I use with the EV Charger Wallbox?
Please refer to the table below for the recommended cable.
Charge Wise Wallbox power | Max. charging current | Recommend cable |
7kW | 32A | 10mm² to 16mm² |
22kW | 32A | 10mm² to 16mm² |
Q. Do I need an electrician to install the Charge Wise Wallbox?
Yes.
You need a qualified electrician for installation, as it should be connected to the electrical system by a certified installer. Australian regulation requires the installer to supply a ‘Certificate of Electrical Compliance’ after install of the wallbox. Warranty will be void if this has not been supplied in the event of a fault.
Q. Do I need to let my electrical company know I have an EV Charger installed?
This varies by state, as each Australian state has different requirements for registration, applications for loads over 20 amps, and OCPP compliance. With EV adoption accelerating, states are continually developing policies to help maintain grid stability under their management.
Q. Is there any maintenance to do on the charger?
EV Chargers are very low maintenance. You are advised to check the condition of the cables and connectors for cracks or irregular wear at regular intervals. The Software can be updated OTA(Over The Air) via the mobile app, this will keep the charger running at optimal performance with the latest features.
Q. Can somebody use my wallbox without my permission?
It depends on the charge access setting on the app. If plug and charge access is selected, it means your wallbox offers free access to all EV drivers. So it is highly recommended to use it in your private facility.
If authorization access is selected, nobody can use your wallbox except you give him/her an RFID card or approve charging via the phone app.
Q. Does the Charge Wise wallbox have anti-theft protection?
Yes.
During wallbox installation, there are two security screws to tighten the wallbox at the top and bottom. Afterward, stick the security label on the top of the security screws for protecting your wallbox.
Q. Where can I see the charged kilowatt-hours(kWh) in a charging session?
If you want to monitor the ongoing amount of delivered energy during a charging session, you can check the real-time energy delivered on OLED display or in the APP.
Q. Does my wallbox have to be connected to WiFi?
No.
With built-in Bluetooth, you can connect and control your nearby Charge Wise wallbox.
If your wallbox has WiFi connectivity, it will enable you to have remote control and more features in the APP.
If you need 4G remote connection, the NEO variants have a 4G option. Please contact Charge Wise for an upgraded quote on a wallbox with 4G option. Then your wallbox will have instant connectivity when installed anywhere with a 4G network.
Q. How do I start charging?
The Charge Wise wallbox is preset with Plug and Charge mode. It means when wallbox installation is done, you just need to connect the EV and it will start charging immediately.
You can also change to access mode in the APP to Authorization mode, then you can start charging by RFID card or via APP.
Q. How do I stop charging?
You can stop charging by RFID card, APP, or simply stop the charging in your EV, once the connector is unlocked on the EV side, you can unplug the cable.
Q. What benefit do I get if I activate Home Balanc?
Optimised Charging Speed:
The system dynamically adjusts the charging speed based on real-time household current values. This ensures an optimal charging rate, preventing overloads and enhancing the efficiency of the charging process.
Grid Capacity Management:
By monitoring and balancing the charging current, the system helps manage the overall grid capacity effectively. This can potentially eliminate the need for expensive upgrades to the home’s electrical infrastructure.
Cost Savings:
The optimized use of electricity during charging sessions can lead to cost savings for the user, as it minimizes the demand for additional grid capacity and reduces the risk of incurring extra expenses related to infrastructure upgrades.
Enhanced Safety:
The system contributes to the safety of the household electrical system by preventing power trips and overloads. It ensures that the charging process aligns with the available capacity, minimizing the risk of electrical issues.
Q. Can I use the charger without the app?
Yes.
You can use NEO range without APP. Every wallbox is preset with Plug and Charge mode without the need of authorization.
If for any reason the wallbox goes offline, the wallbox will continue with the default or previous settings in the app.
Q. What hardware do I need for Solar-Only charging?
For the single phase NEO range wallbox, two CT Clamps are needed to monitor the grid flow and the other to monitor power generation form your solar system. These connect to the wallbox via a Network communication cable which should be installed at the same time as your electrical cable as the CT clamps will reside in your power box. This is a cheap and effective way to enable Solar-Only EV Charging as it is not reliant on inverter brands. The software monitors the flow and adjusts the charging rate as needed.
For Three Phase however, a separate SC Kit is needed to monitor all three phases. This is more expensive due to the extra hardware required. please refer to the installation documents provided.
